Letters to the Editor from the Sept. 24, 2016 edition.

Thank you
Dear Editor,
There are many people who get out in the midst of a storm to try to keep the rest of us safe while we stay, or should stay, in our safe places.
A special group is the workers who respond when our electricity goes off.  Storms and electricity both can be deadly.
I may not know you, but please accept my sincere “thank you,” to all of you.

Thoughts on this and that

Dear Editor,
I agree with some of the comments in the Letter to the Editor on Sept. 17 (Mel Heard’s letter).
However, I do not agree with the comment on recall. First, it is almost impossible to have a recall. Yes, one can sign a petition, but it will not go anywhere.
Look at Local Government Code Chapter 87, Removal of County Officials from Office to learn how a recall works, or does not work. The best recall is the ballot box. If one thinks elected officials are incompetent, then they should form a group and try and find qualified opponents who are willing to file to run against the incumbents at the next election cycle.
This will be approximately 18 months from now for the county. The county judge and Pct. 2 and 4 commissioners will be on the ballot.
However, it is more difficult to get individuals to file than one may think. The last city election had no one file, therefore, no election was held and all incumbents were returned to office.
Do you think all of these individuals were doing a good job? I am not convinced they were, but I am just one person. I am not disagreeing that change may be needed, but only disagreeing with the manner of affecting the change.
Now to the Scurry County Museum and their “March to the Courthouse” to object to being left out of the budget. Supposedly there were 900 or so individuals  who signed  petitions to have the monies returned to the budget. It was.
A couple days later there was an Ask Us question about how many dues paying members were on the rolls at the museum? The answer was “140 including individuals and businesses.”
Where are the other 760 individuals who signed the petition? They obviously are not interested enough to become a member and spend $25 to $100 for a membership.  I guess it must be easier to sign a petition than to sign a check.
