Local drivers show courtesy to cyclists

Dear Editor,

This is a letter I have been meaning to write for quite some time. It is a letter of thanks to all of you that drive the roads in and around Snyder.

I have enjoyed riding a road bicycle around Snyder for several years. Scurry County has some wonderful roads for cycling, both because of the topography and the scenery. Bucolic cycling isn’t much good, however, if you get run over by a car.

What is remarkable is that I have been riding the Scurry County roads for about three years now, and have yet to encounter one rude motorist. This may seem like an odd comment, but I cycled plenty in the Pacific Northwest and it seemed like someone was trying to run me off the road weekly.

Not only have I yet to meet a rude driver, but I have not had one close call. Drivers around here tend to give a decently wide berth, and even slow down a bit if the road is tight.

Drivers who text while driving concern me more than anything, but for now, let’s just leave this letter as a public expression of appreciation for all of the gracious drivers out there.
