Trying to pass the time

A world without sports is a boring one.
The absence of sports has left me with plenty of time. Filling that time has been the challenge.
In a normal week, I’d spend afternoons at a practice or game. Without that option, I am left looking for things to do to pass the time. To fill that time, I have picked up a variety of new activities.
My fiance is an outdoorsy-person.
She enjoys being in nature, but we had yet to find a good nature trail in Snyder. This past week we began going to the trail over by Towle Park. While it isn’t quite as pretty as a Hill Country trail, we enjoyed the hills and the pond in the middle of the trail will be nice. We both enjoy fishing, so I’ll be spending some time there.
I wasn’t much of a television watcher before the quarantine, but I have picked up several new shows. We had watched the first few seasons of Brooklyn Nine-Nine in college.
We’ve watched almost the entire series since going into quarantine. Every character in the show is fantastic, and Jes and I have our own favorites.
I love Jake Peralta (Andy Samberg) because his character’s comedy is reminiscent of Shawn Spencer from Psych, my favorite show of all time. Charles Boyle is a funny side-character who develops into much more as the series goes on. Rosa Diaz’s character is complicated, making her an outlier among the show’s characters.
Jes’s favorite character is Captain Raymond Holt (Andre Braugher) and I can’t blame her for that.
Another series I’ve enjoyed watching has been ESPN’s The Last Dance, a docu-series based on the Chicago Bulls.
The series gives watchers an insight into the culture of that dominant team and shows how good Michael Jordan really was.
If you are a basketball person, it is a must-watch series. Episodes come out every Sunday and I will probably be watching episodes six and seven as you are reading this column.
Sometimes, the boredom tricks me into being productive around the house.
This past weekend, I thought it would be fun to mow lines in the grass like you’d see on a baseball field. But, since when has mowing with a push-mower in 90-degree heat been fun?
It came out OK, but the lines can only be seen on one side of the yard.
I need some sports, and soon.
I am itching to get back into a routine of covering local athletics.
