Off on vacation

This week has been a nice one for me, and probably a bit of a hassle for my coworkers. I have been on vacation in Surfside with my family and best friend. It’s a lovely little town with virtually no tourists, but there is a nice beach and the Intracoastal Waterway, which is a lot of fun for boating. I know that people fish on the waterway as well, but I have never been very good at that. I have trouble sitting still enough to not scare fish off.

It was quite a drive to get here, especially since my sister, my dog and I made a detour to East Texas to pick up my friend and visit her family. It was worth the effort because she had never been to the beach. It was something to see her face when we got there. Plus, it had been a while since I had seen her family. I love them as my own, and it’s hard to stay gone for so long.

We kayaked and paddle-boated on the canal, and laying on the beach was so nice. I got sunburned, which I expected. I burn extremely easily, although it usually goes away fairly quickly.

I spent quite a bit of the week “working” — memorizing lines. Off-book dates for both of the Ritz Theatre’s summer productions are coming up, and I’ve been cast in both of them. Now that I’m done with classes, that’s wonderful. I really needed to get out and socialize, which the stay home orders put a bit of a damper on. Not to mention that theater work is so much fun.

I know there are people who think they could never act, but honestly, a lot of the time it’s like you aren’t even really you anymore. When you get lost in the character, it’s a lot easier because you aren’t thinking about being embarrassed. You’re in an entirely different world.

I’ve also spent time with some games that my nerdier side enjoys: Magic: The Gathering (MTG) and Dungeons and Dragons. It has been a long time since I’ve played MTG, but my best friend and I played in high school and got back into it a little over the week. I’ve even looked into creating a deck built specifically to beat her extremely annoying zombie deck, which has creatures that just keep coming back.

My Dungeons and Dragons group has been playing through Discord for a little while now. Despite a few technical issues, we’re trucking along in our campaigns. And despite the fact that I absolutely cannot draw, I’ve made some progress in making art for my characters.

In any case, it was lovely to get away for a little while, and we still managed to stay away from other people. Although social distancing on the beach might be hard in some places, in Surfside, it isn’t. It doesn’t get very crowded, even during a normal summer when everyone wants to get out.
