Activities abound in Snyder this weekend

A weekend full of activities is planned across Snyder.
The first weekend in May has traditionally been the time classic cars invade Towle Park and quilts line the rails at The Coliseum. But a handful of other events are scheduled for today and Saturday.
The Snyder Wheels Car Show and Cruise officially began at noon today with the show and shine for early arrivers. At 8:30 p.m., a screening of Cars will be held on the east wall of the Towle Park barn. Lightning McQueen and Mater will be at the movie screening for photos and will also be on hand Saturday in the park.
On Saturday, registration is scheduled from 8-10:30 a.m. Pedal car races are scheduled for 10 a.m. and the burnout contest will start at noon. Hot Wheels races are set for 1 p.m. and show awards will be presented at 3:30 p.m.
The best of show car will receive $1,500 and the best Mopar, GM and Fords will each receive $750. The best paint job will receive $500.
The show will end with the annual cruise through Snyder beginning at 7 p.m. Car owners must be registered with the show if they want to receive an award for their cruiser. It will begin with a police escort for the first trip down College Ave. The cruise will end at Sonic Drive-In at 9 p.m. when awards for the top 10 cruisers will be presented.
While the car show is going on, the armory will be filled with vendors selling many Go Texas! products at the Hold Your Horses event. Among the items that will be available are barbecue dinners, clothing, home decor, mechanical animals, handmade wood decor and laser engraving.
At The Coliseum, the Scurry County Senior Citizens Center will host its annual May Day celebration beginning at 2 p.m. The highlight of the afternoon will be the quilt auction and barbecue dinner. 
Booths will include a silent auction booth that will include gift certificates and items donated by local businesses; a craft booth that will include aprons, tea towels, pin cushions, thread catchers and bowl cozies; and a sweet tooth booth that will include baked goods.
The cake and pie auction will begin at 3:15 p.m. and the live quilt auction at 6:30 p.m.
There will be performances by the Deep Creek Cloggers and musician Cathy Whitten.
Barbecue dinner plates will be sold from 4:30-6 p.m. and the cost is $10 per plate. Tickets will be available at the door.
Snyder ISD will give the public a chance to see what students have learned in the STEAM Lab with the Make Faire. The lab, located at Snyder Intermediate School, will be open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. with 15 student groups from each of the district’s campuses sharing their hands-on projects. Those projects include drone racing, student-made virtual reality, cardboard arcade games and engineering challenges.
In addition to students showcasing projects, other hands-on activities will include and egg drop, robotic challenges, making sock puppets and creating your own planter.
Cinco de Mayo will be celebrated at North Park highlighted by the third annual Best of Texas Washer Pitching Tournament. A calcutta is set for 11 a.m. and the tournament will begin at 1 p.m. To register for the tournament, call Manuel Rios at 436-9908.
Music is scheduled throughout the day and will include Conjunto Malo, Conjunto Mi Gusto, Hermanos Ramos and Las Arenales.
The local Folkloric de Guadalupe dance troupe will perform and there will be a parade of horses.
A tour of five downtown square buildings will be the focus of Saturday’s Possibility Tour. Two tours are scheduled with the first beginning at 12:30 p.m. and the second at 2 p.m. Both tours will leave from the Development Corporation of Snyder office, located at 2514 Ave. R, on the east side of the downtown square. It will include a chance for the public to provide input on the buildings’ potential future uses and a behind-the-scenes look at the original Scurry County Courthouse.
Snyder High School will induct three alumni into Theater Hall of Honor beginning at 4:30 p.m. Saturday. The inductees are Powers Boothe, Barry Tubb and Brad Maule.
Boothe, who graduated from Snyder in 1966, won an Emmy in 1980 for his role in Guyana Tragedy: The Story of Jim Jones. Maule, a 1970 Snyder graduate, is most known for his role as Dr. Tony Jones on General Hospital. Tubb, a 1981 Snyder graduate, was featured in Lonesome Dove, Top Gun and Grand Champion.
In addition to the three individual honorees, the cast and crew of the state champion 1970 one-act play Elizabeth: The Queen, will be inducted and Janeen Patterson will be honored for her longtime support of the theater department.
The gala will begin dinner at 4:30 p.m. in the Snyder High School cafeteria before a performance of this year’s state-qualifying one-act play A View from the Bridge in Worsham Auditorium. 
Following the performance, the honorees will be inducted before participating in a panel discussion with the audience.
Tickets for the dinner, performance and ceremony are $25. Table sponsorships are available for $250 for a table of eight and $150 for a half-table. Tickets are available at Spanish Inn. 
And don’t forget that it’s Election Day for Snyder mayoral candidates Tony Wofford and Stephanie Ducheneaux at College on the Square. Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
