The Scurry County AgriLife Extension Office will host its Friend-to-Friend Program on Monday to raise breast and cervical cancer awareness.
The event will be held in the Colonial Hill Baptist Church fellowship hall from 5:30-8 p.m. and is free to the public.
Medical professionals and breast cancer survivor Rhonda Ward will speak and vendors will offer services to breast and cervical cancer patients.
Ronda White, the family and consumer science extension agent for the AgriLife Extension Office, said the event is a chance for people around the county to become more informed about cancer and take a proactive approach toward fighting it.
“We’re just trying to get people involved and encourage them to get their mammograms and paps,” White said. “If these cancers are caught early, they can be treated.”
White said the goal of Friend-to-Friend is to inform people about the signs of breast and cervical cancer and to encourage their friends to get checked as well. White said that all guests are encouraged to bring a friend.
“It’s an encouragement for others when you have a friend to do that with and to hold you accountable,” White said. “We call it a Friend-to-Friend ‘party,’ because it’s not a super formal thing. It’s just a fun, ladies’ night.”
Although women are the target audience, White said anyone is welcome to attend. There will be door prizes and a light meal. Representatives from Cogdell Memorial Hospital, the Cancer Services Network and the Inside Out Foundation, a women’s health organization in Lubbock, will be at the program.
