Whether you’re a barbecue cook or a barbecue connoisseur, the local American Legion post has something to offer you.

The post’s annual barbecue cook-off will be held March 30-31, offering cash and other prizes to the area’s best cooks, as well as plates filled with good food to spectators.

Lynn Maldonado, district president of the American Legion Auxiliary, said entry fees are $125 in the chicken, ribs and brisket categories and $20 for jackpot beans.

Cooks may set up their rigs starting at 5 p.m.  March 30, while cooking and judging will be held the next day. Bean entries must be turned in by 11 a.m., followed by chicken at noon, ribs at 2 p.m. and brisket at 3 p.m.

Spaces for crafts vendors will be available for $25, Maldonado said.

After the judging is completed, the public will have a chance to chow down on the entries beginning at 5 p.m. Maldonado said the cost for each plate is $8. A dance is tentatively scheduled for the evening of March 30, although no acts have been announced.

Money raised during the event will be split between two causes, Maldonado said.

“Some of the money will used to help disabled veterans in our area,” she said. “And some of the money will go to help repair the roof at the post.”

Entry forms for the cook-off are available at the American Legion post, located at 1800 Ave. R, or by calling Maldonado at 728-0940.
