Despite inclement weather, families packed their umbrellas and heavy rain gear to scope out the perfect spot to cast their lines at Towle Park Saturday.
The Buffalo Trails Council of the Boy Scouts of America held its 24th annual Snyder Fish-a-Thon, attracting more than 100 participants.
“The rain didn’t really stop families from having a good time,” Scoutmaster James Bond said. “We had 110 come out today and that’s a pretty good turnout considering the weather. We had about the same turnout last year even with the hurricane-like winds.”
Bond said on a nicer day, the event usually attracts between 200 and 500 people.
“We’ve been looking forward to this all year,” said Julio Castillo of Midland. “My daughters are Girl Scouts, so this was something they really wanted to do. They love fishing.”
Castillo said his daughters caught two turtles.
They were the only girls from their Girl Scouts troop to participate. Bond awarded the girls red and pink fishing poles to thank them for participating.
Awards also went out to the top three weigh-ins for Scouts and community anglers.
Cub Scout Ian Block won first and third place and Cub Scout Max Deleon won second place in the Scout division.
Community winners were Jacob Kiser, first place, Xander Moffett, second place, and Matt Martinez, third place.
