In honor of children who have died as the result of child abuse, High Sky Children’s Ranch will host its annual Child Abuse Awareness Family Fun Fair on April 30.
Due to inclement weather in the forecast, the annual event was rescheduled for next week. It was originally scheduled for Wednesday at the Towle Park pavilion. The event will be held at 5:30 p.m. at the pavilion on April 30.
Within the ranch’s service area, 10 children have died since the fundraiser began 15 years ago.
“April is Child Abuse Awareness Month,” High Sky Children’s Ranch Program consultant Jodi Powell said. “One child dying in our area is too many and 10 children have died due to child abuse since the start of the event. The event not only brings awareness to child abuse, but it also lets families have fun for free. We want to let parents know it is OK to have fun and do stuff as a family.”
Powell said the ranch serves families in Scurry, Nolan, Mitchell, Borden and Fisher counties.
The fun fair travels to a different county each week during April to advocate for abused children and showcase community resources that can help families.
The fair will include free games, food, drinks, prizes and a DJ.
Powell said the program partnered with local businesses and agencies, including Jumpstart Enrichment for Tomorrow’s Students, Cogdell Memorial Hospital, the Snyder Police Department and Snyder Chamber of Commerce.
Door prizes, including bikes and gift cards, will be given away.
“We revamped it this year and put a lot of work into this,” she said. “I hope the community comes out and enjoys spending time with each other and sees the different agencies the community has to offer.”
One tradition of the fun fair will continue, Powell said. At 6:45 p.m., all the booths will close and a time of remembrance will be held to honor those who were victims of child abuse.
