COLORADO CITY — City Councilman Craig Jolley resigned from the Colorado City Council, according to an article in the Colorado City Record. Jolley is currently building a home in Comanche County, and said in his resignation letter that he didn’t feel he could devote enough time to residents in his district. His replacement will be appointed by the council at a future meeting.
SWEETWATER — A Sweetwater man who was charged with first-degree murder is free on bond. Tanner Engel, 25, was charged in the April shooting death of Brandon Heath Abieta, according to an article in the Sweetwater Reporter. He also faces a second-degree felony manslaughter and first-degree felony aggravated assault charge. He was freed on bonds totaling $82,500.
BIG SPRING — Kevin Dwayne Rodgers, 41, of Big Spring, was among 102 federal inmates who had their sentences commuted by President Barack Obama on Oct. 6. Rodgers was given a 20-year sentence in 2009 after being convicted of conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute methamphetamine. He must serve until 2018 as part of the commutation. Rodgers was originally arrested during a 2008 drug sting in which 15 people were arrested.
LAMESA — Aaron’s rent-to-own store plans to move from its current location to the former Sear’s store location at 417 South 1st Street. And the store will receive more than $10,000 to spruce up the building through a façade program administered by the Lamesa Economic Development Corporation (LEDC) and Lamesa Economic Alliance Project (LEAP). “The full 50 percent reimbursement totals $10,327 and includes pressure washing the brick, fresh paint and new signage,” Nathan Tafoya, executive director of both LEDC and LEAP, told the Lamesa Press-Reporter.
SEMINOLE — Sources confirmed that in the wake of the announced closure of the Brownfield and Lamesa Walmart retail locations in the coming months, Seminole’s Walmart store remains in the retail giant’s future plans. “First and foremost, my prayers are with the families impacted by the (announced) closures in Brownfield and Lamesa, however, I contacted Walmart’s corporate office about the rumor of the Seminole Walmart being considered for closure and was informed that Seminole was not included in the recent closure announcement,” said Chris Jones, executive director of the Seminole Economic Development Corp. Ann Hatfield, director of communications for Walmart, confirmed the Seminole location will still be in operation for the foreseeable future.
BROWNFIELD — It was the frustrated voices of farmers that greeted Sen. Ted Cruz Monday morning at the Meadow Co-op Gin. Cruz and his entourage arrived around 8:30 a.m. to listen to farmers’ concerns. “Cotton is not doing well. It is cheap. Peanuts are cheap. Everything is cheap and inputs are high,” Don Carrol said according to an article in The Brownfield News. “I know you (Cruz) are a ‘free market’ guy. We don’t have free trade or fair trade at all in agriculture. We need a lawsuit against China on cotton. All we have is an insurance program and that is it. Insurance is still based on a price and that price is 62 cents. That, at best is break even. It doesn’t help with making any equipment or land payments.”
ANDREWS — Andrews schools found themselves in the middle of a national craze — scary clowns. An online threat was made toward the school district on Facebook from an account registered to clownsinandrews.432. It stated, “I’m in Andrews and I need schools to go kill kids and hold them hostage comment school I’m going to Dead Man’s today.” Law enforcement said they had turned up a suspect the same day the post was made, but provided no further details, according to an article in the Andrews County News.
