The Snyder City Council on Monday will meet in closed session with its attorney or attorneys to discuss potential litigation filed earlier this year.
The lawsuit involves a January 6, 2018 incident during which Cornelio Aviles claimed his shoulder was injured as he was being arrested by Snyder Police Officers for outstanding warrants.
Aviles is seeking more than $250,000 and is represented by Lubbock attorney Patrick C. Simek.
The city is being represented in this matter by Terry W. Rhoads of Cotton Bledsoe Tighe and Dawson, PC, of Midland.
A plea to jurisdiction hearing is scheduled for April 2.
A second closed hearing for City Manager Merle Taylor’s evaluation is also scheduled during the meeting on Monday.
Any action from either of the closed session discussion will take place in open session.
After they were tabled last month, several reports from and a contract renewal with the Snyder Chamber of Commerce are expected to be approved by the Snyder City Council Monday.
The council will vote whether to extend the contract to run the city’s convention and visitors’ bureau — including allocating hotel occupancy tax funds to events that bring tourists to Snyder. It will also vote on several chamber reports, including the most recent quarterly report, 2019’s annual report and 2020 budget for the convention and visitors’ bureau.
The council will also vote whether to accept an $801 bid from Weldon Davis as the high bid for a tax deed sale. The property is located at 411 North Ave. T.
The council will also see a demonstration of the Smart Meter Portal and vote on an $81,958 bid for smart meter system for the utility department.
The council is also expected to approve the police department’s racial profiling report for 2019, approve the December and January financial statements and quarterly investment report, appoint Nancy Doyle as Election Judge and Tommy Doyle as Alternate Judge and to cancel the elections for single member districts 1, 3 and 4.
The meeting is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m. in the council chambers at Snyder City Hall and is open to the public.
A time has been set aside for public comment on non-agenda items.
