Stores across the country are stocking shelves with school supplies, and the buzz of first-day-of-school excitement is starting to circulate.

Amidst the budding back-to-school hype, Snyder Community Resource Center (SCRC) and the Scurry County Ministerial Alliance (SCMA) have partnered to host a Back to School Bash. The bash will be held Aug. 5 from 8-11 a.m. at the Family Life Center at Snyder’s First Baptist Church.

Organizations and businesses have been invited to volunteer at the event and give away school supplies at various booths.

“Our goal with this is to engage in the community and to let them know what organizations are out there,” SCRC marketing director Jessica Robbins said. “Each organization will have a table, so people will need to engage with them when they get their supplies.”

Among the services offered at the bash are free haircuts from licensed cosmetologists, tooth care goodie bags and free hearing screenings.

“Services are free to the community for school-age children, but the children must be present in order to receive them,” Robbins said.

There will also be a fill-a-bag of clothes available for $1.

Businesses are accepting new and used shoes, new and used clothing, school supplies and monetary donations.

Drop-off locations include the Snyder Chamber of Commerce, Snyder Daily News, First United Methodist Church, Bealls, Scurry County Library, First Baptist Church, KSNY, Snyder Fire Department and Snyder First Assembly of God.

Additionally, Bealls has partnered with SCRC and SCMA to offer $10-off coupons through Tuesday for shoppers who drop off donations of new and used clothing.

Not only will donations benefit the community, but they will also benefit teachers in the upcoming school year.

“Ten percent of what comes in will go to a teacher fund for teachers to get school supplies,” Robbins said. “Every year, there’s kids who still show up to school without supplies, so we want to have something for the teachers to be able to use. Our goal is to contact the superintendent and set up a system where teachers can reach out to him and let us know what supplies are needed. We will then go purchase the supplies and provide them as funds are available.”

One of the benefits of hosting a local bash has been all of the support of local businesses.

Other businesses and organizations participating include Snyder Police Department, Scurry County Boys and Girls Club, Big Country Electric Cooperative, Scurry County Health Unit, Snyder Shares Free Store, Word is Life Deliverance Church, Eastside Church of Christ, Colonial Hill Baptist Church and First Presbyterian Church.
