Twelve Snyder ISD spellers took their seats on the Worsham Auditorium stage Tuesday for the district spelling bee.
After several rounds, seventh grader Yajat Bhakta and fifth grader Heaven Miles were the last spellers standing.
Miles tripped over “collude” when she left out one “l.”
Bhakta then correctly spelled “bulimic” and “billiards” to win.
Next up for Bhakta will be the 64th annual Regional Spelling Bee on March 5 at the Lubbock Memorial Civic Center.
Though Miles missed a word she said she knew how to spell, she was happy to be the runner-up. She said she was also relieved that the pressure was over.
Preparing for the district bee, Miles said she studied words about 45 minutes each day.
Bhakta said he felt good about winning. He was also confident that he could spell the words as they were called out to him.
He said he will increase the amount of time he spends studying words before the regional spelling bee.
Other competitors in the district spelling bee were Mario-Muro Sotelo, Maria Duran, Javen Hall, Cameron Smith, Nathan Loper, Alex Monroy, Nicole Delmundo, Collin Guynes, Addison Ulm and Danielle Baiza.
