The Snyder ISD board of trustees denied a request, on a split vote, for the Snyder High School theatre department to travel to Scotland for a theatre festival next year.
The department had planned to participate in the American High School Theatre Festival in August and no district funds were requested.
Board policy states that “any out-of-state trips taken by student organizations or other student groups shall require approval from the board.”
Drama director Craig Robertson said 10 students, including some who would have graduated in May, would be attending along with him, his wife, Annie, and mother and father, Dayton and Bettsey Robertson.
Board president Ralph Ramon, along with Brad Hinton and Ron Hester voted to allow the grow to make the trip, but said his concern was safety.
“That’s what I worry about. But I like the idea of Snyder ISD being represented,” he said.
Board member Lauren Collier said she agreed with Ramon’s thoughts about safety.
“Two years ago, I wouldn’t have blinked (in voting for it),” she said.
Collier, Ronnie Anderson, Carrie Richardson and Doug Neff voted against allowing the group to make the trip.
The board voted unanimously for the high school band to travel to Winter Park, Colo. in the spring.
All funding is being raised by the band and no district funds will be used.
Trustees also approved a change in the district’s student code of conduct related to expulsion for a drug-related offense.
The administration recommended adding “if a student incurs two or more drug-related offenses within one calendar year, it will result in a referral to juvenile probation with the possibility of placement in a drug rehabilitation facility in lieu of expulsion.”
Trustees also approved the final reading of a policy update related to video and audio recording devices in certain special education classrooms or other special education settings; a resolution naming county extension agents as adjunct staff members for 4-H and Extension Service activities; the designated fund balance for the district; and rescinded the Snyder Intermediate School campus turnaround plan and implemented a targeted improvement plan.
The board also approved the Texas Association of School Boards energy cooperative interlocal agreement where the district may purchase energy services and fuel at discounted prices. Deputy Superintendent Dr. Randy Burks said the district will only participate in the fuel purchasing program at this time.
No one spoke during a  public hearing on the district’s targeted improvement plan for Snyder Junior High School and the district.
Trustees also received updates on the improvement plans for the high school, intermediate school and Snyder Primary School, upcoming changes to the board policy concerning interrogations and searches and an improved behavior program at the primary school.
Following a 30-minute closed session, trustees approved the hiring of Annagayle Ashlock and Annie Stanger for assignment at the junior high school, and Julie Reyna at the intermediate school. The resignation of junior high school teacher Robert Allen was announced.
In the construction report, Burks told the board that the punch list at the junior high school was not complete and that roofs throughout the district received hail damage.
“Workers are at the junior high on weekends to complete the punch list,” said Burks, adding that all money has not been released for the project.
