Boil notice still in place for Ira, Dunn residents

A lack of adequate disinfectants in water samples means Ira and Dunn residents will remain on a boil water notice for the time being.

The Ira Water Supply Corp.’s (IWSC) boil-water notice for those two communities, which has been in effect since water pressure dropped below acceptable standards two weeks ago, will remain in effect until test samples show an acceptable amount of antibacterial and other disinfecting agents in the water, officials said.

IWSC President Darryl Calley said today that disinfectant levels were still too low in water samples taken by the company, forcing it to delay lifting the notice.

The company’s water samples must be approved by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality-contracted laboratory in Sweetwater before the boil-water notice can be lifted.

IWSC customers in Ira and Dunn have been under the notice ever since water pressure along the company’s main delivery line from Snyder dropped drastically on June 21. Several leaks were subsequently discovered and repaired.

The company buys water from Snyder and it is transmitted through a four-inch line to a storage facility east of Ira. It was that line that was the focus of an intense search involving IWSC, Snyder Water Department, Snyder Fire Department and private citizens for several days.

Calley said a grant and a loan has been approved for the construction for a new water line and storage facility, which should be completed in 2019-20.
