Two activities Snyder residents look forward to during the Fourth of July celebration are the Lions Club patriotic prayer breakfast and parade through Towle Park.
The prayer breakfast, which will begin at 7:30 a.m. Monday in the Towle Park barn, will feature Snyder High School graduate Lt. Col. Robert Kimmel, who is stationed at Fort Hood.
Kimmel is the son of Paula and Chuck Kimmel, who live in the Gail area. His grandmother is Helen Hathaway of Snyder.
Kimmel was commissioned in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in 1998 after graduating from Texas A&M University and is currently the commander of the 8th Brigade Engineer Battalion in the 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division. Kimmel has also been stationed in Washington, D.C. and has deployed during military operations in Kosovo, Iraq and Kuwait.
He is married to the former Beth Brown of San Antonio and they have three children, Noah, Caleb and Lydia. The couple is completing the adoption of their fourth child, Samuel.
Kimmel will be among those riding in the parade, which will begin lining up at 9 a.m. and will roll through the park at 10 a.m. The parade route will be the same as the previous two years, Snyder Chamber of Commerce officials said.
The parade will start at Moffett Field and head southeast down Towle Park Road North. The parade will pass the skate park, the pool and splash pad, and will follow the loop in front of the playground equipment near the former Prairie Dog Town. From there it will turn on to Towle Park Road, passing the pavilion and armory before ending at the youth baseball fields.
A portion of Houston Ave. will be closed to through traffic from 7 a.m. until the end of the parade. To the north, Houston Ave. will be barricaded just south of the intersection of 42nd Street.
The south end will be barricaded just north of Buck Logan Road, which runs between Moffett Field and the Little League fields.
The staging will be the same as previous years. On the north end of the staging area, only parade pedestrian drop-offs will be permitted. There will be no parking and there is no place for additional vehicles.
On the south end of the staging area, people with go-carts, motorcycles and other parade vehicles needing to be unloaded from trailers will be permitted on the south Moffett Field parking lot located at the southwest corner of the field.
Only vehicles driving in the parade will be allowed into the staging area, and all vehicles must enter from the south, using Houston Ave.
