Still only five local candidates have filed paperwork with Scurry County Republican Party Chairman Drew Bullard for a spot on the March Republican primary ballot.
All five are incumbents: Jana Young, Tax Assessor/Collector; Terry Williams, Commissioner Precinct 1; Shawn McCowen, Commissioner Precinct 3; Trey Wilson, Sheriff; and Michael Hartman, Scurry County Attorney.
Candidates have until 6 p.m. on Dec. 9 to file their paperwork for a spot on the primary ballots.
There will be a contested race for Scurry County Democratic Party chair on the Democratic primary ballot. Current chair Ed Vinson will be challenged by Lacey Franks.
According to the Texas Secretary of State’s website, which was last updated Nov. 26, several candidates have filed for spots on the primary ballots. Because it can take several days for a candidate’s information to appear on the website, the following candidate list may not be complete.
Staff members from the offices of Republican State Senator Charles Perry or Republican State Representative Dustin Burrows, both of Lubbock, said the candidates had filed their paperwork for spots in the primary, although it has yet to appear on the Secretary of State’s website.
Snyder’s Addison Perry-Franks said she will turn in her paperwork during a multi-candidate event on Dec. 8 in Austin.
One U.S. Senate seat from Texas is up for grabs this year and is currently held by John Cornyn. Although the Secretary of State’s website doesn’t indicate Cornyn has filed for re-election in the Republican primary, if he does he will be opposed by Virgil Bierschwale, Dwayne Stovall and Mark Yancey.
Three Democrats have filed for a spot on the ballot for U.S. Senator, Chris Bell, Jack Daniel Foster Jr. and Royce West, according the secretary of state’s website.
Incumbent U.S. Representative, Jodey Arrington, announced that he has filed re-election paperwork, however the secretary of state’s website on Wednesday did not yet list any candidates for the seat.
On the Texas primary ballot, Roque "Rocky" De La Fuente Guerra and Zoltan G. Istban, have filed paperwork with the secretary of state’s office as a Republican candidate for president. President Donald Trump has not yet filed for a spot on the ballot, according to the website.
Democrats running for President who have filed with the secretary of state’s office include Michael Bloomberg, Pete Buttigieg, Kamala Harris, Amy Klobucher and Bernie Sanders.
Republican and Democratic primaries will take place on March 3, 2020. Early voting will begin on Feb. 18. The primary elections will determine who represents each party in the Nov. 3 general election.
