Five candidates have filed paperwork with Scurry County Republican Party Chairman Drew Bullard for a spot on the March Republican primary ballot. All five are incumbents: Jana Young, Tax Assessor Collector; Terry Williams, Commissioner Precinct 1; Shawn McCowen, Commissioner Precinct 3; Trey Wilson, Sheriff; and Michael Hartman, Scurry County Attorney. Scurry County Democratic Party chairman Ed Vinson said no candidates have filed for county-level offices. One U.S. Senate seat from Texas is up for grabs this year and is currently held by John Cornyn. Cornyn will run for re-election, opposed by fellow Republicans Dwayne Stovall and Mark Yancey. Ten Democrats will also vie for the position: Chris Bell, Michael Cooper, Amanda Edwards, Jack Daniel Foster Jr., Mary Jennings “M.J.” Hegar, Sema Hernandez, John Love III, Adrian Ocegueda, Cristina Tzintzun Ramirez and Royce West. No candidates have yet filed to run for U.S. Representative in the local 19th Congressional District in 2020. The district’s current U.S. Representative is Jodey Arrington, who has given no indication he will not run in the upcoming election. President Trump will — so far — be opposed by two fellow Republicans and 18 Democratic candidates. Republicans facing Trump for the highest political office include Joe Walsh of Illinois and Bill Weld of Massachusetts. Mark Sanford of South Carolina has withdrawn from the race. Democrats seeking the office include U.S. Senator from Colorado Michael Bennet, former Vice President Joe Biden from Delaware, U.S. Senator from New Jersey Cory Booker, Montana Governor Steve Bullock, Mayor of South Bend, Ind., Pete Buttigieg, former U.S. Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Julian Castro, U.S. Rep. from Maryland John Delaney, U.S. Rep. from Hawaii Tulsi Gabbard, U.S. Senator from California Kamala Harris, U.S. Senator from Minnesota Amy Klobucher, Mayor of Miramar, Fla., Wayne Messam, Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick, U.S. Senator from Vermont Bernie Sanders, U.S. Rep. from Pennsylvania Joe Sestak, hedge fund manager Tom Steyer, U.S. Senator from Massachusetts Elizabeth Warren, author and founder of Project Angel Food Marianne Williamson and entrepreneur Andrew Yang. Candidates have until 6 p.m. on Dec. 9 to file their paperwork for a spot on the primary ballots. Republican and Democratic primaries will take place on March 3, 2020. Early voting will begin on February 18. The primary elections will determine who represents each party in the general election to be held on Nov. 3, 2020.
