Yvonne Carr received a welcome surprise Saturday morning.
Two members of American Legion Post  No. 575 in Lubbock presented her with $1,100 in donations on behalf of the American Legion, American Legion Riders and Sons of American Legion. The presentation took place at Snyder’s American Legion Post No. 181.
Carr lives in Sweetwater but works at the Price Daniel Unit. Her son, U.S. Marine Jonathan Carr,  was one of 18 Marines injured recently during a training exercise at Camp Pendleton, Calif. One Marine died when their vehicle rolled four times.
According to his mother, Carr suffered a cracked spine, burns and numerous abrasions.
“He is getting better,” she said. “He is beginning to walk a few steps at a time.”
Chaplain Bill Youngren said that when the Lubbock post heard about Carr’s accident he said they decided to help his family.
“Our post considers Carr local so we wanted to do something for his family,” he said. “In Texas, the American Legion is one large family.”
With that spirit in mind, Youngren and Beneze contacted the Snyder post to make arrangements for the checks to be presented.
Officials with Post No. 181 also made Carr and her son post members for one year.
