The Snyder Chamber of Commerce board of directors gave Executive Director Linda Molina the authority to file paperwork to trademark the name White Buffalo Days, an annual celebration that began in 1981.
Molina said she contacted a trademark attorney who would oversee the process for $1,500. She said the attorney will seek the trademark on the basis that the event celebrates the county’s history. No one else has applied for the trademark.
Once the trademark is received, Molina said it will be in effect for 10 years. However, after five years, paperwork must be filed showing that the trademarked name is still being used.
She said she also asked about other events the chamber sponsors, specifically the West Texas Western Swing Festival, and was told that western swing is a generic term that cannot be trademarked.
Directors decided to seek the trademark protection for White Buffalo Days after Jim Coventry sought and received a trademark for White Buffalo Bikefest, which the chamber had sponsored for 10 years.
In other business, Drew Bullard was appointed chairman of a nominating committee to find board members for 2016. Two seats will be open next year. They are Merle Taylor and Michael Rodriguez.
