What if you were able to travel to a different time period? Or explore the world of mythology? Or even dive into the culture of the Southwest?

With the Scurry County Museum summer camps resuming next week, children will have the opportunity to learn about these subjects and more.

“The second half is going to be really dynamic with lots of activities for every camp,” museum Educator Erika Jayne Christian said.

The camps resume July 10 and will run through July 28. Every week there will be a themed camp in the morning from 9 a.m. to noon and in the afternoon from 1-4 p.m. Camps will run Monday through Friday.

“The best part about the summer camps is being able use materials from the museum at the camps,” Christian said. “The kids are getting to use museum materials that are not readily available to the public.”

Not only are the camps an opportunity for children to explore museum artifacts and learn about different subjects, but they also provide beneficial, one-on-one attention to aid the children in their learning.

“The most beneficial part for the kids is that we have such great volunteers,” Christian said. “There’s always someone available when the kids need help or have a question.”

Next week, the morning camp theme is Time Travelers, and the afternoon camp theme is Art II.

“It looks like next week is going to be a great week,” Christian said. “For the Time Travelers camp, every day is a different time period in history. One day we’ll be doing cave art, one day we’ll be doing coat of arms, and one day we’ll be taking a field trip to Heritage Village.”

For the Art II camp, children will explore different art forms, such as clay and canvas art.

“We’re going to give them free rein to try and figure out things themselves,” Christian said.

Registration for next week’s camps is open through the end of Saturday and spots are still open in both camps.

To register their children, parents may stop by Scurry County Museum or call 573-6107. First through sixth graders are eligible.

The cost is $55 for museum members and $70 for non-members. Museum members may also register their children online.

For the week of July 17-21, the morning camp theme will be STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) and the afternoon camp theme will be A World of Mythology.

For the week of July 24-28, the morning camp theme will be All About Animals, and the afternoon camp will be Southwest Art, Music, and Culture.
