The Folklorico de Guadalupe dance group will host a Cinco de Mayo fundraiser May 6 at Winston Park.

The fundraiser will include a co-ed softball tournament, washer pitching tournament, concession stand and train rides for children.

The concession stand will feature breakfast burritos and menudo in the morning. In the afternoon, hamburgers, roasted corn and brisket burritos will be on the menu.

The softball tournament will begin at 8 a.m. and each team must have five men and five women on the field. The entry fee is $150 per team.

The washer pitching tournament will begin at 10 a.m. The cost is $40 per team and will be double elimination. The format will be three washers per person and no bust.

The top two teams for each event will receive T-shirts and other prizes will be given.

To register for the softball tournament, call Luis Alaniz at 574-021, and to register for the washer pitching tournament, call Manuel Rios at 436-9908.

The dance groups are scheduled to perform at 6 p.m. and a dancing horse will perform at 7 p.m.

The folkloric dance groups perform at community events and will perform the Jalisco and Veracruz dances at schools on Friday in recognition of Cinco de Mayo. They will also perform at the Cogdell Memorial Hospital Foundation’s fundraiser on May 13.

The proceeds from May 6 will help dance students buy new outfits and host a dance camp instructed by Omar Alarcon of Mexico.

“Omar is coming to teach the students new dances and to revise our old ones,” dance instructor Luis Alaniz said. “That’s what the fundraisers are for, to get him here from Mexico and pay for new outfits and dresses.”

Alaniz said the two-week camp will consist of two sessions equaling eight hours each day.

“It takes commitment from the kids and the parents,” Alaniz said. “It’s like any other extracurricular activity.
