City to spray for mosquitoes when complaints are received

It’s that time of the year when City of Snyder crews begin spraying for mosquitos.

There’s only one catch — there haven’t been many mosquitos to spray for, yet.

City Public Works Director Eli Torres said there are no immediate plans for crews to begin spraying for the summertime pests.

“We usually don’t start spraying until we receive complaints, and we haven’t received any so far,” Torres said. “Once we start receiving complaints, that’s when we’ll start spraying.”

June and July are prime mosquito months in this area, but so far this year, the pests have been thankfully absent — for the most part — from this area, Torres said.

The city has taken a proactive approach to a possible outbreak of mosquitos.

Torres said crews have been applying “larvacide” to standing water around town in order to eliminate breeding grounds for the insect.

Once complaints are received, Torres said spraying will begin.

“We’ll do one half of town one night, then the other half the next night,” he said. “We’ll also spray out in the county some.”

After the initial round of spraying, Torres said crews will spray about every two weeks thereafter for the duration of mosquito season.
