It is time to get the pets and plants indoors.

The National Weather Service (NWS), in a special weather bulletin, said a strong cold front will make its way through West Texas this afternoon.

The front could bring a chance of snow and sleet before midnight as the low drops to 18 degrees. Wind chill values could be as low as 4 degrees.

One major concern will be the winds, which are forecast to gust as high as 40 miles per hour.

“Northerly winds will increase behind the front as temperatures fall quickly below freezing,” the NWS statement read. “Strong winds may result in some areas of blowing dust for a brief period this afternoon with the initial passage of the front. Wind chill values near zero can be expected by early Tuesday morning across much of the area. Dress appropriately and cover exposed skin when venturing outdoors.”

The NWS is not expecting any snow accumulations.

“Any precipitation across this area looks to be very light and little to no accumulations is expected,” the statement read. “Given the rapid decrease in temperatures, any moisture on roads, bridges and overpasses will freeze, resulting in hazardous travel conditions.”

Areas east of Scurry County are expected to receive the worst conditions.

“Travel conditions are expected to worsen farther to the east, so those with travel plans tonight and Tuesday should monitor the latest forecasts and plan accordingly,” the statement read.

Scurry County is expected to remain below freezing through Wednesday.

“Many areas could see a prolonged period of temperatures below freezing. Make sure your pipes, pets and plants are protected,” the statement read.
