Meeting in person Friday morning, the Scurry County Commissioners Court extended the county’s Stay Home, Stay Safe disaster declaration until April 21.
Texas Governor Greg Abbott has issued an order requiring social distancing and closure of non-essential businesses until April 30.
“Just know that the governor’s order is still in place, and it will remain in place,” County Judge Dan Hicks told the commissioners. “If we don’t have our order in place, the governor’s order is still in place and pretty much everything in our order will remain in place, except for some of the ones we had added in our order.”
Hicks reiterated his plea to avoid family outings to local grocery stores.
“The biggest thing that we’re trying to get people to understand is, don’t take your whole family into the grocery store or into Wal-Mart,” Hicks said. “One person go. Just one person. You don’t have to have everybody go. And when you get in there, don’t socialize. Don’t get in groups. If you’re going to talk to somebody, do your social distancing. I think there are some that aren’t taking this as seriously as other people are.”
There were no line-item transfers, budget amendments or accounts payable presented at the meeting.
Commissioners will meet again at 10 a.m. Tuesday.
There will be a public hearing on the county’s recent foray into county-wide voting. On March 3, Texas Democrats and Republicans went to the primary polls to choose their parties’ candidates for the Nov. 3 general election.
For the first time in Scurry County, voters were able to cast ballots at any polling place, regardless of their places of residence within the county.
In other business, the court will consider an engagement letter with accounting and financial services firm Condley and Co. LLC.
An item regarding extending the disaster declaration is on the meeting’s agenda, however, Commissioner Shawn McCowen said the inclusion of the item was a contingency measure in case no extension was approved at Friday’s meeting.
