Local community leaders are holding daily teleconferencing meetings to discuss the area’s response to and plan for coping with the COVID-19 pandemic.
While Scurry County has yet to receive a positive test result, the daily communication between county, city, school and other local leaders started with a phone conference Monday. Leaders planned to continue the meetings each weekday throughout the crisis.
They have discussed the positive test in Mitchell County, extending the Stay Home, Stay Safe order and new protocols at Cogdell Memorial Hospital. Those stories appear elsewhere in today’s edition.
Hicks reported that he had put a link to the Small Business Administration’s loan program on the county’s Facebook page as well as its COVID-19 response page, www.scurrycovid.com.
“I put out on our Facebook page — and if y’all want to put this out there for the local businesses who are non-essentials or shouldn’t be open — is the SBA’s loan program,” Hicks said.
Bland reported that the school district served approximately 900 meals per day on weekdays last week, but that the Saturday service was significantly lower.
“Saturday was only about 400, so we’re trying to decide whether we want to provide Saturday meals when we do Friday,” he said. “We’re trying to make a decision on that, but today (Monday) was 939 meals, and last Thursday and Friday were over 900 also.”
Toward the end of the meeting, Hicks asked, “Any other positive news?”
“The sun is shining and it’s warm outside,” quipped Bland. Tuesday’s teleconference was closed to the media. Hicks reported afterward that no more tests have been conducted locally.
Hicks said he would like to hold another question-and-answer session with Snyder Fire Chief and Scurry County Emergency Management Coordinator Perry Westmoreland and Dr. Bid Cooper.
“There is still some confusion and I’d like Dr. Cooper to answer any medical questions, and Perry any emergency management questions,” Hicks said.
