Construction crews at Western Texas College are making progress on the $15 million infrastructure improvement project.
Mike Thornton, chief operating officer, said Teinert, the construction company working throughout the campus, is making up time on the various projects because all of the materials are on site. He said that has helped prevent delays.
All of the piers and concrete work for the piers at the dining hall were completed last week. It had been delayed during the Christmas holiday because of inclement weather. Thornton said crews are now “making up for lost time.”
The swimming pool in the health/physical education building has been filled with dirt. The pool area will become the floor for the new walking track and weight room. The cardiovascular center will feature new equipment and will be a public facility. Dr. Barbara Beebe, WTC president, said details of fees and public hours have not been determined.
Thornton said he tells the faculty and staff members to look at the fine arts building to see what the renovations will look like campus-wide.
“We tell them to go look and be patient,” he said. “That building is visually better now.”
The hallways of the building are complete and new flooring, ceilings and lighting were installed. Thornton said the stage area will be renovated once the final play of the spring semester is presented.
Behind the scenes, the old water loop was turned off last week and the college is now running on the new loop. When two fire hydrants are installed, the water project will be complete.
Thornton said six air handling units are left to install and sidewalks, which include drain trenches, are being poured.
