The Snyder City Council is expected to vote on whether to grant a tax abatement for Midwest Solar Power, LLC, which says in a letter to the city it would build a solar farm in the SnTx Industrial Park if the abatement is granted.
The company has applied for a 100-percent abatement for 10 years, according to its application. The company wrote that it plans to spend $550,000 to build the farm.
Because of an agreement with Big Country Electrical Cooperative, the company would be able to use a 30 percent tax credit for the first several years the solar farm is in operation. Big Country Electric would have the option to purchase back the land at a lower cost in the future.
The company also approached Scurry County about an abatement, but commissioners tabled the request because of the project’s location inside the city limits and directed County Attorney Mike Hartman to work with city officials on abatement guidelines.
The project is expected to create three part-time jobs during its eight-week construction period, according to the application.
During a meeting with commissioners, Jim Chandler said the return on investment at the solar farm would be very low, which is why he is seeking the abatements. Big Country Electric has agreed to purchase the electricity generated at a rate lower than its current wholesale cost.
The council will also take the final vote on an ordinance regulating how recreational vehicles are stored and where there are allowed to park. During its last meeting, the council asked the city staff to ease some restrictions.
The council will also vote on a resolution that would change the rate of on-call employees from $12 per day to $20 per day and will go into closed session to discuss real property. Any action from the closed session will be taken in open session.
The meeting will begin at 5:30 p.m. in the council chambers at Snyder City Hall, and is open to the public.
