The National Weather Service issued a flash flood watch for Scurry County.
The watch will be in effect until 1 p.m. Thursday.
“A strong upper level trough currently located over southwestern Arizona will move eastward toward southeast New Mexico and West Texas,” the weather service said. “Moisture and upper level lift will increase the approach of this upper low allowing for heavy rain to develop.”
The potential for heavy rainfall will increase this afternoon and tonight.
“Rainfall amounts of one to three inches, with localized amounts of four to five inches are expected,” the weather service said. “Therefore, flash flooding is possible, especially in low lying and other flood prone areas.”
The chance for rain tonight is 100 percent, according to the weather service.
On Thursday, some storms could produce heavy rainfall and the high will be in the upper 60s. The evening low will be in the upper 50s with showers and thunderstorms remaining in the forecast.
On Friday, the weather service is forecasting a 20 percent chance of thunderstorms.
