This November, Scurry County residents will be able to vote at any of the county’s polling locations, regardless of their address.

Scurry County Commissioners approved the measure unanimously when they met Tuesday morning.

“It’s a good win for the voters because it’s going to make it so much simpler for them,” said Scurry County Clerk Melody Appleton. “They can go anywhere in the county at any of our polling places and still vote for their school board, and it’s really not a lot more work on us. I’m kind of tweaking those contracts, but what I’m asking y’all to do today is allow me to sign as the election official, these contracts with the city and the school to let me do their elections for them.”

In other business, the court approved setting Scurry County Sheriff’s Department fees for civil services in 2021 at the same rates as they have been this year. The item is routine and required each year.

Commissioners approved bids on five tax deeds and property cards in the amounts of $350, $150, $450, $300 and $200.

“It may be cheap, but it puts them back on the tax rolls,” said County Judge Dan Hicks.

The commissioners also approved additional revenue to the county from two sources.

“The first one is from TAC (Texas Association of Counties), the auto insurance proceeds from the continued repairs on the Extension Office truck,” said County Auditor Angela Sanchez. “The other one is from TAC, the HEBP (Health and Employee Benefits Pool) surplus distribution, which is the medical insurance.”

Sanchez said the revenue for the truck repair was $1,665, while the HEBP revenue was $29,793.

Commissioners approved budget amendments, as well as accounts payable in the amount of $1,098,291.

Commissioners met in closed session for about an hour and 40 minutes to discuss personnel matters, including the annual review of Scurry County Welfare Department Head Bianca Gonzales and Scurry County Emergency Management Services Director Jason Tyler. The court took no action when it reconvened in open session.

Budget Amendments

• $3,866 to miscellaneous maintenance and repair at the County Extension Service to place funds received and accepted by the court from TAC into a budget line for repairs of the truck belonging to the Extension Service.

• $72,783 to interest expense in the LE Construction I&E Fund for an interest payment for the law enforcement center.
