Southwest Dairy Days, an open house event planned Thursday at Scurry County’s T&K Dairy, has been postponed due to inclement weather and rescheduled Monday from 1-5 p.m.
T&K, located at the intersection of U.S. Highway 84 East and FM 1673, is the first fully automated dairy farm in Texas.
During the free event, members of the public will have the opportunity to observe the dairy’s technology in action.
The dairy features a multitude of technological innovations to keep its cows comfortable and happy – and producing as much milk as possible.
Among the innovations the dairy boasts include 18 robotic milking stations – when cows approach a station, milkers automatically attach to udders, and the milking commences. The cow is identified through a tag on its neck, allowing the computer to accurately track milk production and potential health issues per cow.
The cows are pampered with giant overhead fans to keep temperatures cool on warm days, and giant waterbeds, all for the ultimate bovine comfort experience. The barn even features automatic cow back scratchers.
All the innovations aim to increase milk production at the dairy by 10 to 15 percent over conventional dairy farming methods.
