Data: County population figures drop below 17,000

For the first time since 2011, Scurry County’s population fell below 17,000 people.
According to U.S. Census Bureau data, the county had an estimated population of 16,866 people on July 1, 2018. That is down 184 people compared to the 2017 estimate of 17,050 people.
In 2010, the county’s official population was 16,921 and in 2011 it was 16,932. From 2012 to 2017, the estimated population ranged from 17,102 to 17,588, Census figures showed.
Borden County saw its population estimate fall from 673 in 2017 to 648 in 2018. The 2010 census total was 641. 
For the third straight year, Nolan County’s estimated population was below 15,000. The 2018 estimated population was 14,751, which is up from the 14,700 estimated in 2017. In 2010, the official population for the county was 15,216.
Mitchell County’s population was down, from 8,468 in 2017 to 8,145 in 2018. The 2010 official count was 9,403.
Fisher County’s estimated population in 2018 was 3,839, down from the 2017 estimate of 3,880. The official population recorded in 2010 was 3,974.
The census bureau has not released population estimates for individual cities.
