Division I football players headline Hall of Honor class

Two former Snyder High School football players who played at the Division I level headline the 2016 class of the Snyder Athletic Hall of Honor.
The induction ceremony will be held at 11:30 a.m. Friday at Martha Ann Woman’s Club.
Tickets, which are $25, may be purchased at the Snyder ISD athletic office and AimBank.
Chris Garrett, who played at the University of Nebraska, and Trey Tippens, who played at the University of Oklahoma, headline the six people who will be honored by the school district.
Garrett played football and basketball and competed in track and field at Snyder. He was named to Max Emfinger’s Top 100 Texas football recruits and the Abilene Reporter-News 1980s all-decade football team.
At Snyder High School, Garrett was a three-year starter for the football and basektball teams and lettered all four years in track. He earned honorable mention all-district basketball honors in 1985.
During the 1985-86 athletic season, he earned all-district honors in football (honorable mention) and basketball (second team).
During the 1986 football season, Garrett was selected to the all-district team as a linebacker and tight end.
Tippens started four years for the Snyder football team and earned all-district honors each year. He was an honorable mention selection in 1988 and earned first team honors in 1989, 1990 and 1991.
On the basketball court, Tippens was a four-year starter and named to the all-district team his sophomore, junior and senior seasons. He was selected to the all-district second team in 1989 and the first team in 1990 and 1991. Tippens also lettered in track and field two straight years.
Tippens was ranked the No. 1 defensive end prospect and 10th overall recruit in Texas by Emfinger. He was a two-year starter at Oklahoma, earning all-Big 8 honors in 1994.
Golfer Brooke Lowrance was a four-year player on the team. She  helped Snyder to a third-place finish at the 1995 Class 4A state tournament. She won the district’s medalist title four times and the regional medalist championship in 1994.
Lowrance received a scholarship to play golf at Texas Tech and became a four-time all-conference player (Southwest Conference in 1996-97 and Big 12 in 1998-99). She was named an all-American in 1998.
Lowrance was the 1996 Texas State Amateur champion and played on the United States NCAA team in South Africa at the 1997 NCAA World Golf Championship.
Sherry Mayes Bilderback played volleyball and helped the Lady Tigers to a three-year record of 99-11, including the 1978 and 1980 state championships. She was named to the 1980 all-state and the all-tournament teams.
Bilderback, who received the 1981 SHS female athlete of the year award, played in the Texas High School Coaches Association all-star game.
She started her college career at Southwest Texas State University, now known as Texas State University, and later played at Angelo State University.
Martin coached girls’ basketball for six years, compiling a  129-55 record while winning three district titles. He also coached at Sudan, Amarillo High School and Austin Westlake before coming to Snyder.
Martin will be inducted into the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame in May 2017.
Snyder athletic department secretary Rhonda Ward will receive the Lifetime Achievement Award. Ward was the supervisor of the after school program in 1998. She also served as the high school cheerleading sponsor before becoming the athletic secretary.
Ward, who survived a battle against breast cancer, started the Snyder Cancer Fund to help local families with their fight against cancer.
