More than $10,000 in donations to Scurry County for Christmas decorations at the courthouse led the discussion at today’s Scurry County Commissioners’ Court meeting.
Two of the donations came from anonymous sources – one for $3,960, and the other for $557.34. The latter of the two was specifically designated toward Christmas decorations for the gazebo at the square.
The other two donations came from Digby Construction in the amount of $4,050, and from Musselwhite Trucking Co. in the amount of $1,500.
“That is fantastic, that our community would be willing to come together and make those donations to us, to do what we’ve done at the courthouse this year,” said County Judge Dan Hicks. “They’re not complete, but they will be before the end of the weekend. I think there’s going to be a lighting on Sunday at 6 p.m., and we can see what the generosity of the community can do. We really need to thank the anonymous donors, Musselwhite and Digby Construction for putting that money out there for us.”
Later in the meeting, commissioners voted unanimously to certify the additional revenue represented by the Christmas donations.
In other business, commissioners unanimously approved a resolution to elect members to the Scurry County Appraisal District’s Board of Directors.
The county’s nominee for the board is Fred Cross. Along with Cross, candidates approved in the resolution today were Ronnie Anderson, Jerry Boyd, Clarence Spieker and Jay Waller.
Later in the meeting, the commissioners approved four amendments to the county budget — two into maintenance, repair and miscellaneous to account for the donations for Christmas decorations from Digby Construction and Musselwhite Trucking Co., $2,170 into miscellaneous expenses to cover over-budget courthouse security items, and $9,828 into equipment in the Scurry County EMS budget to cover costs for the purchase of a training mannequin.
Commissioners also approved one line-item transfer for $650 from elections and records to part time and communications in the county clerk’s budget to pay for an early voting worker.
Commissioners unanimously approved a bid of $500 on a piece of property which had been reclaimed for unpaid property taxes.
