Early voting numbers top 2014 totals

Scurry County voters are following the national trend and turning out in higher than typical numbers for this year’s mid-term election\.
County Clerk Melody Appleton said her staff was busy during the first week of early voting with 1,683 people casting ballots. 
In 2014, 620 voters cast ballots during the first week of early voting.
The 2018 total represents 17.9 percent of Scurry County’s 9,399 registered voters.
Early voting will continue next week on the first floor of the Scurry County Courthouse from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
In Hermleigh and Ira, early voting numbers also topped 2014’s first-week totals. Hermleigh ISD officials reported 26 votes cast this year, up from 18 four years ago. Ira ISD reported 42 votes during the first week, up from 20 in 2014.
The Nov. 6 elections will feature several statewide elections, but no county offices will be contested. 
Scurry County voters will help decide on the District 83 Texas House of Representatives seat between incumbent Dustin Burrows and challenger Drew Landry.
Here is the official list of local candidates who are running unopposed:
County Judge — Dan Hicks.
District Clerk — Candace (Candy) Jones.
County Clerk — Melody Appleton.
County Treasurer — Nelda Colvin.
County Commissioner, Pct. 2 — Craig Merritt.
County Commissioner, Pct. 4 — Jim Robinson.
Justice of the Peace, Pct. 1 — Norma Martinez.
Justice of the Peace, Pct. 2 — Ricki R. Webb.
Seven candidates are running for the three seats on the Hermleigh ISD board while 10 people filed to run for four seats on the Ira ISD board.
In Hermleigh, the field includes John M. Harty Sr., John S. “Jack” Harty II, David K. “Bubba” Botts, Michael Hildebrand, Gerald P. Rodriguez, John “Big John” Pence and Justin White. Early voting will be held from 8 a.m. to noon in the school district office.
The 10 candidates who filed in Ira were Jerry Jamison, Dirk Dunn, Justin Donelson, Megan Shultz, Bill Walker, Justin Taylor, Jason Gruben, Tanner Poole, Dustin Murdock and Kayci Wall. Early voting will be held from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Roy Sallee Gym.
Early voting for all three elections will end on Friday.
