Many Scurry County families will be able to have a Thanksgiving meal they might not have otherwise, in part because of the East Side Church of Christ’s T-500 Thanksgiving meal drive.
Deacon Bob Campbell said the idea for the drive started about a year ago. The “T” in T-500 comes from Thanksgiving, and the 500 is in reference to the estimated number of families in need in Scurry County.
“Our ultimate goal is to help out 500 families,” Campbell said. “We had 130 families apply and qualify this year, but it is our first year.”
Each qualified family received a foil turkey pan with enough green beans, stuffing, potatoes, corn, rolls, cranberry sauce and turkey to feed between four and six people.
The food was purchased by members of the church or with donations.
On Saturday, church members distributed meals to families, who came to pick them up at the church.
Campbell said the aim is to continue helping others, beyond the holidays.
“Once a family has applied and their name is in our database, the church can help them in the future if there is a death in the family or a job loss or something like that,” Campbell said. “We’re just trying to help out and give back to the community.”
