On Saturday night, Shining Stars Sports and Recreation held its second annual father-daughter dance. The theme was The Little Mermaid. Father-daughter duos spent the evening dancing, visiting and spending time together. Stephen and Michelle Read, who started Shining Stars to encourage healthy lifestyles, decided to start the father-daughter dances because of the impact a similar event had on their daughters when their family lived in San Angelo. “We want girls to know that they’re special,” Michelle Read said. “And who better to teach you how to be treated like a lady than your dad?” The winners of the dance contest were Darryl and Kahleah Hampton. Overall, Read said, attendance at this year’s dance was up. She hoped that attendance would continue to grow over time. Shining Stars Sports and Recresation hosts youth sports leagues, including soccer, flag football, T-ball, and track and field. They also host a mother-son dodgeball tournament, which will occur on March 28.
