The Scurry County Food Cupboard, one of eight agencies that receive funding from the Scurry County United Way campaign, provides food on a supplemental basis for people in need in Scurry County.
In 2015, the facility helped 3,086 families and a total of 13,707 people. Throughout the year, 739 volunteers helped sort and distribute food.
Director Sonny Greenfield said the amount of people in need keeps growing.
“We usually have about 350 to 380 families a month, but last month we had 415, which is the most we’ve ever had that I can remember,” Greenfield said.
He said funds from the United Way campaign helps keep the facility operational.
“It’s a necessity,” Greenfield said. “We use (the funds) to buy groceries.”
He also said peanut butter and jelly is given out each Tuesday.
“That way the kids can always make them a sandwich if their parents are not there,” he said.
The Food Cupboard has 12 to 16 volunteers on site each Tuesday.
He said the facility was recently cleaned and restocked by the Scurry County 4-H Club the day before distributions.
“They came and cleaned and restocked and they did a really great job,” Greenfield said.
Mandy Campbell, a volunteer and 4-H Club adult leader, said the effort was part of National 4-H Week, where members choose one day to do volunteer work.
“We chose to do this,” Campbell said. “We are also doing a food drive for them so they can know this service is needed and that there are people in this community that survive with this.”
