The Scurry County Food Cupboard, which serves more than 350 clients, has had about a 10 percent increase in the assistance it provides this year compared to last year.
“There has been an increase in the number of young couples lately,” director Sonny Greenfield said. He correlates it to the loss of oilfield jobs and people being displaced.
He also said that there have been many volunteers who have been helping on a regular basis. Greenfield said volunteers are members of churches in Snyder and some are not affiliated with a church, but just show up to help.
There are approximately 12 volunteers each Tuesday from 9 a.m. to noon, which is the time the food bank is open.
If someone would like to receive assistance, volunteer or donate non-perishable items, they may do so during that time. The food bank is located at 812 25th Street.
Greenfield said anyone can volunteer at anytime, however the church schedule for every Tuesday is First Presbyterian Church, January and July; St. Elizabeth and Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic churches, February and August; Trinity United Methodist Church, March and September; First United Methodist and Calvary Baptist churches, April and October; East Side Church of Christ, March and November; and Colonial Hill Baptist Church, June and December.
Monetary donations may be mailed to the Scurry County Ministerial Alliance, P.O. Box 416 in Snyder, TX 79550.
