Scurry County United Way celebrated another successful fundraising campaign.
The 2018-19 I am Somebody campaign reached its goal and raised over $118,000 for eight different agencies.
“Thank you all for being here,” said 2019 United Way President Jonathan Farmer during the United Way’s awards luncheon Tuesday. “This wouldn’t be possible without you all. We have an outstanding group of generous people here today.”
This year’s agencies received their allocation checks during the luncheon. Those allocations were Jumpstart Enrichment for Tomorrow’s Students (JETS),  $36,000; Gateway Family Services, $25,000; Boys Scouts, Buffalo Trail Council, $7,500; West Texas Children’s Advocacy Center, $7,000; Girl Scouts, Texas Oklahoma Plains Council, $5,500; Scurry County Food Cupboard, $5,000; Cancer Services Network, $5,000; and the Snyder Volunteer Fire Department, $2,500.
Cancer Services Network Representative Nancy Tyler told the combined Lions Club and Rotary Club audience about how the United Way’s support is helping cancer patients in Snyder.
“Because of you, we have been able to help many cancer patients live their new normal life,” she said. “We don’t use the money to put towards research to find a cure, we provide people the financial stability they need to just focus on the treatment they need to extend their life.”
Four Jack and Ann Smartt Awards were presented.
The Smartts have been long-time supporters of the Scurry County United Way and the award is the highest honor the local board presents each year.
The Jack and Ann Smartt awards are presented to individuals, organizations and businesses who set an example through their involvement and willingness to serve their community.
Cloyce and Anita Talbott, David Nicholson, Big Star Radio Group and the Snyder Daily News were presented with this year’s awards.
Certificates of appreciation were presented to individuals, businesses and organizations that went, “above and beyond” this year.
Cogdell Memorial Hospital, First Bank and Trust, Ira ISD, James (Mike) and Marsha Levens, Oncor Electric Delivery, Snyder ISD, United Supermarkets, Western Texas College and Western Texas College Art Club were recognized for their work on this year’s campaign.
Scurry County United Way Executive Director Sheila Hale said the board currently has a head start on this fall’s campaign.
More than $26,000 in cash and pledges has been collected for the next campaign, she said.
