Ten people used a new grocery delivery program on its first day.
United Supermarket, Scurry County Senior Center and the Development Corporation of Snyder (DCOS) are providing free grocery shopping and delivery for senior citizens.
Senior Center Director Tammy Quick said that although the center was trying to use its own staff as much as possible, several volunteers helped as well.
“Most of the volunteers help us with home-delivered meals,” Quick said. “We’ve got some staff, and we’ve had a couple others call and say, ‘Hey, can I help if you need some volunteers?’ So we do have a couple from the community that have pitched in and are helping. We have about a dozen volunteers to help with that.”
Volunteers will not enter homes. Quick said that on the first day the service was offered, volunteers delivered groceries to 10 homes. There was one delivery on Friday and three on Monday.
“This is the end of the month, so people’s funds may be kind of low. When people start getting paid and getting checks at the first of the month, we’re kind of looking for it to pick up,” she said. “The ones that have called have been very, very appreciative of the fact that someone is willing to go out and do this. We’re thankful for our volunteers.”
The center will continue to offer this service as well as pick-up and home-delivered meals for seniors.
They will take grocery lists between 8 and 11 a.m. and deliver between 1 and 4 p.m. Payment is by check, cash or card.
