Ira and Hermleigh high schools will compete in district one-act play meet today at Westbrook High School. The first production will start at 2 p.m.
Ira had initially chosen one play but then changed to Nasty Things, Murders by Arthur Lovegrove.
In this suspenseful play, four ladies in the Grantley Home for Retired Gentlewomen get upset when the TV in the lounge breaks down at the climax of a real-life murder drama.
They talk about the murder, and it appears that one of them may have been the murderer.
When she leaves the room, the others ask the retirement home’s matron what they should do.
Upon the “suspect’s” return, an unexpected telephone conversation sets the three at ease, but after they have left the room, she begins acting strangely.
This play has a small cast, with five female roles. Sydney Mathis will play Ethel, Jessica Heiskell will play Louise, Breauna Hall will play Madge, Anzlee Hale will play Mary the murderess, and Kandice Clark will play the matron. Molly Jamison will be the alternate.
Crew members include stage manager Kylie Miller, sound and light technician Rykin McCown and Charlotte Highfield.
Hermleigh High School Theatre Director Cami Dehls said they will be doing a production called Ruby’s Story, written by Ron Osbourne and set in June 1944 in Appalachia.
Walter and Grace share a home with four daughters — Rose, Helga, Frieda and Ruby, who must all learn to deal with a family that is falling apart.
At the core of the conflict is Walter's allegiance to his German heritage, no matter that Helga's husband and Rose’s fiancé are at war against all things German. Grace is left wondering what can restore harmony.
Cast members include Javi Del Real playing Walter, Brianna Rawls playing Grace, Stormi Cobb playing Rose, Mercedes Smith playing Helga, Kalynn Carroll playing Frieda, Serenaty Vargas playing Ruby, Korbin Elder playing Sid, Tyler Thompson playing Stan and extra Jase Ellison.
Crew members include stage manager Davy Callaway, lights technician Emma Dugan, sound technician Shelby Lamb, makeup and costume designer Camryn Hill and Marizza Luevano.
The competition will begin at 2 p.m.
Ira will perform third, at around 3:30 p.m.
Hermleigh will be the last of five schools to compete, at around 5:30 p.m.
