Track renovations at Hermleigh ISD have gotten more expensive.
During Monday’s school board meeting, representatives from Hellas Construction, which was contracted to replace the school’s track surface, told school trustees that the track’s asphalt and base material needed to be replaced.
“We pulled the surface off the track and found that we have asphalt failure,” said Chuck Wheeler, from Hellas. He told trustees that the base was built using materials that weren’t designed for that purpose, and over time had shifted.
He told trustees they would need to remove the existing base, add new flex base and asphalt, and then the new track surface could be applied.
The cost for the additional work will be $299,785. The track might be finished in time for the track season, but weather will play a role in the construction timeline.
After hearing from the Hellas representatives and before voting to proceed with the additional work, trustees adjourned into closed session.
President Roy Gill originally said the closed session was to discuss financing the project, which is not permitted under the Texas Open Meetings Act, and when asked again, said trustees would discuss personnel.
After reconvening in open session, trustees voted to pull the money from the $419,000 settlement the district received for problems related to construction at the campus.
Trustees approved Hermleigh Superintendent Cassie Petty’s recommendation that Kevin Roemisch, Gill, David Digby, herself, Heath Gibson, Amber Palmer and Jeremy Jackson be named to the School Safety Committee. The committee will meet in January and again before the end of the school year.
The board also approved Texas Association of School Board’s (TASB) Policy Update 114, which involves changes resulting from the 86th Texas Legislative session.
When asked just before adjourning the meeting, Gill said no action would be taken on the closed session personnel discussion.
