Hermleigh ISD trustees will soon spend almost $350,000 to renovate the school’s track and elementary playground.
During their Tuesday meeting, trustees approved a pair of proposals from Hellas Construction to renovate the track and playground. Work on the track will cost $210,000, while playground renovations will cost $139,000.
The school’s track has deteriorated since it was constructed several years ago and now has several worn spots and holes. The playground surface, meanwhile, is severely worn and is now considered an injury hazard.
Mark Ball, business development manager for Hellas, said his company would install a three-layer surface on the track, topped by a water-proof layer, that comes with a 5-year warranty. He added that if the track starts to show signs of wear after five or six years, the company would “re-top” the facility for $100,000 to extend its life.
Ball also suggested that the district install wind screens around the track and perform scheduled maintenance on the track to extend its life even further.
Hellas will install shock pads over the playground areas children are most likely to fall, then cover the area with artificial turf similar to the surface of the football stadium.
He said crews could begin renovating the playground as soon as they receive the go-ahead from the school district. He suggested waiting until the end of football season to begin work on the track. Track surfacing was estimated to take between 15-30 days, depending on weather conditions.
In other business, trustees approved the teacher appraisal calendar and appraisers for the 2019-20 school year and renewed an adjunct faculty agreement with Scurry County 4-H.
Trustees also held a brief closed session to discuss private student information. No action was taken after the board convened back in open session.
