The Scurry County Historical Commission and Scurry County Museum will accept information and input from the community about the Santa Fe Depot on Thursday.
Commission member Paula Hatfield said the group has not received word from BNSF about a six-month reprieve on the demolition requested earlier this month. The group will collect information, including pictures, from 3:30-6:30 p.m. at College on the Square.
“We will be collecting your stories and scanning your photos that will document the history of our depot and the railroad history for a myriad of projects,” Hatfield wrote in an email. “This information will be archived in the museum and will be helpful as we move forward with our application to the National Trust for Historic Preservation, grants and other funding sources, future exhibits at the museum and a book that is currently being considered.”
Hatfield said the commission is seeking pictures taken inside the depot from 1911-86, as well as information and memories of the inside waiting area, the office, telegraph area and restrooms.
BNSF officials told local representatives that the planned demolition was put on hold, but no time-frame was given. BNSF spokesman Joseph Faust said that the company has a contract with a company in Amarillo to demolish the building, which opened in 1911.
During a rally to save the depot, it was announced the demolition company would not travel to Snyder.
Faust also said that a permit with the City of Snyder has been acquired for demolition to begin. The permit is good for 30 days.
The historical commission and museum will sponsor a trip to Post to tour the Santa Fe Depot. The group will leave at 10 a.m. Nov. 4 from the Family Dollar parking lot.
