Ira finishes second at district UIL academic meet

Ira High School finished second overall in the District 12-1A academic meet at Borden County High School Monday.
Three teams — literary criticism, mathematics and spelling and vocabulary — placed first for Ira while students won titles in  current issues, mathematics and spelling and vocabulary.
Hermleigh High School had the first place science team and the top three individuals in the event.
Hermleigh’s team also claimed first place in prose interpretation.
Ira will have 13 students compete in the regional event while Hermleigh will have 10 after finishing in the top three of its event.
The regional event will be held April 23 at Angelo State University.
Here are Ira results:
• Science: The team of Michael Brumbelow, Eddie Ervin, Ben Fonville, Grace Highfield, Austen Rollins and Adrian Sparks placed second.
• Spelling and vocabulary: The team of Alexis Collins, Leslie Haley, Valerie Juarez and Tori Rosas placed first. Rosas was first and Haley was third.
• Poetry: Ashlee Bowlin, fifth place.
• Prose: Lesli Whetsel, third place, and Lexie Hanshew, fifth place.
• Informative speaking: Reese Camp, sixth place.
• Literary criticism: The team of Alexis Ballard, Lexy Castillo, Sabrina Highfield and Savannah Juarez finished first. Ballard finished second, Highfield was fourth and Castillo was fifth.
• Mathematics: The team of Savannah Juarez, Shailee Manning and Austen Rollin finished first. Manning was first, Rollins was third and Jaurez was fourth.
• Calculator Applications: The team of Savannah Juarez, Tori Rosas and Devin Falcon was second. Juarez was fifth and Rosas was sixth.
• Current issues: The team of Michael Brumbelow, Ben Fonville, Josh Salazar and Kade Sanders was second. Fonville was first and Sanders was fourth.
• Computer Applications: Reese Camp, fifth place. 
• Editorial writing: Michelle Brazil, fourth place.
• Feature writing: Karina Cowan, sixth place. 
• Ready writing: Sabrina Highfield, sixth place.
• Persuasive speaking: Kade Sanders, sixth place.
• Number sense: The team of Alyssa Goodwin, Alexis Reed and Tori Rosas was second. Rosas finished fifth.

• Science: The team of Jonah Ferris, Jacob Guzman, Kelsey Digby and Araceli Morales was first.
• Chemistry: Jonah Ferris, first place.
• Biology: Jonah Ferris, first place.
• Physics: Jacob Guzman, first place.
• Social studies: Jonah Ferris, third place.
• Poetry: Abby Tate, second place, Aaliyah Sneed, third place, and Joseph Long, sixth place.
• Prose: Brittany Martin, first place, and Andres Rodriguez, sixth place.
• Informative speaking: Riley White, third place.
