The Ira ISD board of trustees has called two special meetings to interview candidates for the superintendent’s position.

The board will conduct three interviews on Sunday beginning at 2 p.m. and two interviews starting at 4 p.m. Monday. All five interviews will be held in closed session. The meetings during which the interviews will be conducted will be held in the Roy Sallee Gym boardroom. The meetings are open to the public, but the interviews will be closed to the public.

Following meeting with representatives from Casey, Cox and Robertson Education Consultants in closed session Monday, board president Dennis Taylor said he announced that the board would conduct five interviews. Board member Chuck Barbee told the Snyder Daily News on Tuesday that the board had not made a decision on how many interviews it would conduct. Taylor said the board did not vote during the closed session.

Taylor said the five interviews are just a starting point for the board in the process of replacing Jay Waller, who will retire effective June 30.

“We could call others. We were well pleased with the quality of the applicants,” Taylor said of the 32 applicants.

Following the five interviews, Taylor said the board will review notes from the interviews before scheduling additional interviews.

“I will probably let the board think about the interviews before scheduling another meeting,” he said.

Taylor said he would like to have a superintendent in place before the end of the school year. He said he would like for the new superintendent to work with Waller before his retirement.

“I think that way they will get a better feel for our school,” he said.
