The Ira ISD board of trustees, on Tuesday, approved the school safety certification program paperwork.
The paperwork is required by the Texas Education Agency to show the district is in compliance with school safety, including listing the faculty members who are allowed to carry a weapon on campus.
Principal Dale Jones reviewed the Texas Primary Reading Inventory program for kindergarten through third grade students. Jones said the program allows teachers to see what level students are at in reading.
Testing is done at the beginning, middle and end of the school year.
“The teachers take this very, very seriously,” Jones said. “This gives them a foundation of where students are going into the future.”
Superintendent Jay Waller updated the board of his trip to Austin to testify about Additional State Aid for Tax Reduction (ASATR). He told the board additional hearings are being held about school accountability and encouraged trustees to get involved in the process by writing letters to lawmakers.
“We are fighting for funding and we are fighting for accountability,” Waller said. “We will continue to fight it.”
The board did not hold a closed session.
