Barbecue cooks wanting to show off their skills and win prizes will want to circle next weekend on their calendar.

On Friday and Saturday, the Snyder American Legion Post No. 181 will host a cook-off to raise money for roof repairs and other renovations at the post. Cooking categories include brisket, pork spare ribs, chicken and beans.

The entry fee is $125 per cooking team, said Lynn Maldonado, a member of the Legion’s ladies auxiliary.

So far, 21 teams, some from as far away as New Mexico and Pecos, have entered the event. Enteries will be accepted until the head cooks’ meeting at 9 a.m. Saturday, Maldonado said.

The cook-off is sanctioned by and governed under the rules of the Lone Star Barbecue Society, she said.

Cash awards and trophies will be presented to the top three teams in brisket, ribs and chicken, while the top team in the beans category will win cash and a trophy.

Judging will begin at noon Saturday for beans, followed by chicken at 1 p.m., ribs at 2 p.m. and brisket at 3 p.m.

After judging is completed, the Legion will sell barbecue dinners for $8 a plate beginning at 5 p.m.

The Legion also will host a country-western dance beginning at 8 p.m. Saturday. The cost is $8 per person and $15 for couples.
