The Scurry County Library is set to begin its Imagine Your Story 2020 Summer Reading Program on Monday.

Children’s Librarian Amy Hodges said that she misses having groups of children in the library, but due to capacity restrictions, the library staff is trying to keep library traffic to a minimum while finding a way to encourage children to read.

“We average well over 100 kids every Wednesday. We attempted to tape off the entire big room, and we could only have 50 kids at a time, and I’m not good at turning people away,” she laughed.

This summer’s program is going to encourage reading at home.

“I’m excited that we’re going to at least get to hand out prizes,” Hodges said. “I hate it that we can’t do everything like normal, but we’re going to make do with what we have.”

Registration began Friday and will continue through July 17. It may be completed in person at the library or online at www.scurrycountylibrary.com under the Summer Reading Registration tab.

There are three age groups — Read to Me for toddlers and older, Independent Reader for children who can read with little or no help and Teen for children who have completed sixth through twelfth grade. Once registered, students may pick up a registration prize bag and reading logs at the library.

Students must keep track of their own reading time, or time they were read to, in at least 30-minute intervals. The first logs may be turned in after 12 hours have been recorded and logs after the first will need at least six hours of reading time logged. No more than one log per student per week will be accepted.

“We just want the kids to read,” Hodges said. “If they’ll just read, that’s all I want.”

The program will run through July 29.

Although the library normally provides other programs and entertainment during the summer, library staff have opted not to schedule events this summer in order to follow social distancing guidelines. Should guidelines change, events may be added to the calendar.
